Signal transduction through so-called MAPK ("Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase") pathways is a frequently used process in eukaryotes from yeast to man. The yeast cell wall, which is composed of glucans, chitin and mannoproteins, ensures cell shape and stability and can withstand enormous pressures. Nevertheless, it has to undergo substantial rearrangements under certain physiological and/or environmental conditions (e.g. in mating or the application of extracellular stresses like low osmolality or cell wall interfering drugs).
