作为疾病的一项生物标志，染色体水平的缺失、扩增等变化已成为科学家研究的热点。以往科学家运用传统的染色体核型分析方法（如染色体区带染色分析，FISH等）已获得许多染色体结构变异的可贵进展。但传统的方法实验操作繁琐，分辨率低，不能覆盖全基因组，难以提供染色体变异位点的精确定位。基于基因芯片的比较基因组杂交技术, aCGH（array-based Comparative Genomic Hybridization）平台的出现解决了上述问题。这种平台能够支持研究人员通过微阵列准确研究与疾病有关的染色体的变化，目前aCGH已经广泛应用于研究肿瘤发生过程中伴随的基因变化，如染色体的畸变等；通过研究基因拷贝数目的变化，寻找新的原癌基因或抑癌基因；揭示生物体抗药性的机制及代谢过程中可能发生的基因组变化；发现新的生物标记，可用于临床诊断、疾病的分型等研究领域中，大大加速了人类对基因组DNA结构变异在遗传疾病中意义的理解。
