DMSO是一种氢键破坏剂。因其抗冻作用，可用于细胞的冻存；因其对大分子的变性作用，
用于变性凝胶电泳等。由于DMSO二甲基亚砜是重要的极性非质子溶剂。
它可与许多有机溶剂及水互溶因此DMSO常用于溶解试剂，
也常用于细胞的冷冻保存。过滤除菌时不能使用醋酸纤维素膜，而应该使用尼龙膜。
DMSO不能使用PS、PVC、PC材料的容器，
而应该使用LDPE、HDPE、PP材料的容器。
