(a) Filipodia attach cells to the rigid surface of the EQUL bead. During harvesting, trypsin easily dissolves the filipodia, making the process faster and increasing the yield of viable cells.

(b) On competitive beads, cells form a skirt which penetrates into the porous dextran structure of the bead. This structure makes harvesting with trypsin more difficult.

(c,d) Compare the yield of healthy cells from EQUL beads in only 3 minutes (c) with the less viable yield after 45 minutes with competitive beads (d).

(e,f) Competitive beads with porous surface and electrostatic charge offer the apparent advantage of faster attachment, but cells adapt and begin to grow more quickly on EQUL beads. After 24 hours, cells on a competitive bead (left) (e) have not started to spread. After only 2 hours on a EQUL bead (right), cells have spread and can begin to proliferate (f).
Total cell passage time can be reduced with EQUL microcarriers. A study conducted with a major pharmaceutical company in 1988 shows that MRC-5 cells on EQUL collagen-coated beads reach confluence faster and can significantly increase total yield over a given time period.
